Grab Introduces Group Ride, Making Shared Travel and Fare Splitting Easier

Grab Indonesia has introduced Group Ride, a feature that allows several people to arrange a shared journey through a single GrabCar booking. The feature is designed to make it easier for users traveling with friends, family, or colleagues who have different pickup points and destinations.

Through a single invitation link, the host or trip creator can invite up to three other people to join. Each member can enter their own pickup point and destination through the app, while the host can review and arrange the route order before placing the booking.

The feature also allows fares to be split more flexibly. Users can choose whether the entire cost is paid by the host, divided equally, or divided proportionally based on each passenger’s journey.

Marketing Director Grab Indonesia Asep Haekal said Group Ride was developed to address the needs of users who want to travel together without the hassle of arranging routes and calculating fares manually.

“Through the Group Ride feature, we want to help make shared journeys easier to arrange, more transparent, and still comfortable for all members of the trip,” Haekal said.

Most Commonly Used for After-Work Activities

Since its launch in Indonesia in April 2026, the number of trips using Group Ride has reportedly increased more than 30-fold in five months. As many as 32% of trips were also taken by users who had not used Grab for a long time or had never used GrabCar before.

Group Ride usage mostly comes from major cities, particularly Jakarta, Bali, Bandung, and Surabaya. Nearly 70% of trips take place on weekdays, while around 54% occur during the time people commute home or after working hours.

In addition to trips home, the feature is widely used for going to restaurants, shopping centers, gathering places, and traveling after shared activities at night.

Can Be More Economical

Based on Grab’s internal data, around 73.3% of Group Ride trips recorded average savings of 54.6% compared with booking vehicles separately. The amount saved may vary depending on the route and the number of passengers.

Each member can view their share of the fare through the app before the trip begins. Proportional splitting also allows costs to be adjusted according to each passenger’s distance and travel conditions.

In addition, users can still access the Safety Centre and Trip Monitoring during the journey, in accordance with the features available in the app.

Grab urges users to check the pickup point, destination, route order, and payment method before completing the booking, and to share the Group Ride link only with people they know or trust. (Risma)
