Director and producer Hanung Bramantyo has announced his latest film project, Descendants of the Sun, adapted from the popular Korean drama series of the same title. The film marks an international collaboration between Indonesia and South Korea and is scheduled to be released in Indonesian cinemas in 2027.

The project involves Dapur Film together with RFA, NEWKO Global Entertainment, NEW, Barunson C&C, D BAY FILM FACTORY SDN. BHD, Dwi Warna Sentosa (Tobali Film), and Piring Langit. Barunson E&A will handle international sales, while Contents Panda, a subsidiary of NEW, will handle distribution in South Korea.

The original Descendants of the Sun series was produced by NEW, directed by Lee Eung-bok, and written by Kim Eun-sook and Kim Won-suk. The work has been exported to 32 countries and reached audiences in around 100 countries through various OTT platforms.

Interestingly, the Indonesian version is the first adaptation of Descendants of the Sun in film format, after it had previously been adapted into a series format in several countries. Although it refers to the main story of the Korean version, the film will have its own identity, with a story relevant to the Indonesian context.

“The process took quite a long time, and I’m happy to finally announce this international collaboration. The film will be released in Indonesian cinemas in 2027, featuring a talented cast from Indonesia’s film industry,” said Hanung Bramantyo.

The film stars Reza Rahadian, Dian Sastrowardoyo, and Eva Celia. The other cast members will be announced later.

Hanung chose Reza and Dian as the lead actors because they are considered to represent Indonesia’s major actors while also having a close connection with the public. The film will explore the romantic story of a couple with different professional backgrounds and ideals.

For Reza, the project is also an important reunion with Hanung. The two have worked together since Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (2009), the film that also helped Reza win his first Piala Citra FFI.

“For me, Mas Hanung is like an older brother. We have worked together for a long time, since the film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (2009). So this is more than just a reunion. I couldn’t say no to Mas Hanung,” said Reza.

Meanwhile, Dian said she was enthusiastic because this is the first time she and Reza have been lead actors together while also having a love-interest relationship in one film.

“I’m very excited because it is only in this project that we are truly brought together as co-actors and will be involved in a love interest,” said Dian.

Eva Celia also said that the project presented her with a new challenge. She felt that Hanung’s direction provided a comfortable space to develop the character she plays.

The filming of Descendants of the Sun has now been completed, and the film will be released in Indonesian cinemas in 2027. The latest information about the film will be announced through the official channels of Dapur Film and the film. (Henry)
